Cantaloupe
- Cantaloupe has been growing since ancient times in the Nile River Valley in Egypt. It likely first originated in the Middle East or India, but ancient Egyptians and Romans are known to have grown the melon. Cantaloupe is a member of the Cucurbitaceae, or gourd, family. They have a deep orange or yellow color. This is an indication of their antioxidants, especially beta-carotene.
Cashew
- The cashew come from a tropical tree formally known as Anacardium occidentale. The tree produces a fleshy, pear-shaped stalk called a cashew apple on its branches. Yet, this part of the plant isn’t the fruit. Instead, the true fruit is a smaller, kidney-shaped structure that grows underneath the cashew apple, also known as a drupe. Inside the fruit is where you find the edible seed that most people know as a cashew nut. Although it isn’t actually a nut, it is a fruit.
Cape Gooseberry
- Cape gooseberries are fruits averaging 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter, and are held inside a green to tan, papery husk that forms an inflated, lantern shape. The fruite is reportedly native to Peru and Chile. The cape gooseberry is actually a fruit of the potato family although it looks more similar to a small tomato. Cape gooseberries are rich in vitamin C, vitamin P, and potassium. The fruit is very low in calorie content.
Crab Apple
- The crab apple is a small, dense crowned, rounded, thorny tree or shrub that grows up to 10 m tall with trunk diameters of 23–45 cm. Crab apples are distinguished from normal apples based on teh size of fruit. If the fruit is two inches in diameter or less, it is named a crab apple. If the fruit is larger than two inches, it is classified as a normal apple. Crab apples are a rich source of Vitamin A.
Cloudberry
- Cloudberries are in the rose family and are a low perennial forb. They are typically known as bakeapples. This plant spreads by creeping rhizomes and they grow close to the ground. The cloudberry plant produces only a single berry on each stem.. The fruit turns from red to a yellow-amber colour when ripe. they are native to the Arctic and subarctic regions of the north temperate zone.
Chayote Fruit
- The chayote is a thin-skinned squash-like fruit which originates from Mexico. The chayote is a member of the gourd family. Chayote squash is technically a fruit but is eaten like a vegetable. All parts of the gourd are edible, including the seeds, skin, and flowers. It is known for its cucumber-like mild, cool and slightly sweet flavour.
Cherimoya
- Cherimoya is a green, cone-shaped fruit with leathery skin and creamy, sweet flesh. It originates from the Andes mountains in South America. Though it is grown in tropical places with high altitudes now. Due to its creamy texture, cherimoya is also known as custard apple. It’s often eaten with a spoon and served chilled like custard. The cherimoya fruit is rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Canary Melon
- Canary melons are small to medium sized fruits, averaging 10 to 13 centimeters in diameter. Canary melons are believed to be a type of muskmelon, which were first discovered growing in Persia and the surrounding region. Muskmelons were transported from Persia to Egypt in ancient times. Canary melons are an excellent source of fiber to regulate the digestive tract and the antioxidant vitamin C to strengthen the immune system
Coconut
- Although the name ‘coconut’ would suggest that it is a nut, it is actually more commonly known as a fruit, or a drupe. The coconut tree (Cocos nucifera) is a member of the palm tree family (Arecaceae) and the only living species of the genus Cocos. The term “coconut” (or the archaic “cocoanut”) can refer to the whole coconut palm, the seed, or the fruit, which botanically is a drupe, not a nut. Coconuts originate from south east Asia.
ChokeBerry
- The Chokeberry can be many different colours, including: red, purple, black, grey or a glossy purple/red colour. They originate from eastern North America. Chokeberry plant is a woody shrub growing to 4-8 feet tall. The fruits are about 1/3-1/2 inch in diameter and are about the same size as a pea. The tree of Chokeberry has perennial lifecycle which has the lifespan of 40-60 years in wild. Thirty berries are contained in a bunch.
