Countries That Starts With I – Did you know that there are (around) 197 countries in the world? I say around because sometimes borders shift and politics means that some countries are not as stable as others. There are 49 countries in Europe, 54 countries in Africa, 49 in Asia, 23 in North America, 12 in South America and 14 in Oceania. This is a great list for teachers or quiz setters or just out of interest really! Have a look at our list of countries that begin with the letter I.
Remember this page is more for fun than a definitive list of countries and although we do try and keep it up to date, world events mean that sometimes things change.

Also, there are differing opinions on the number of countries on each continent, depending on which organisations criteria you reference. For example some state that Europe has 44 countries while some believe it to have 51. I have gone with 49. This has been a topic for debate over centuries, with particular regard to the borders between the two continents of Asia and Europe. Also, some confusion arises over the continent of Europe and the European Union. Europe is a geographical definition of the continent, whilst the European Union is a economical and political organisation.
